Non-Vintage
NV Laherte Freres Brut Tradition was one of Hooke’s favourites. ‘Fresh aroma of green apples and pear’, he wrote. ‘Rich lingering flavour’. It shows surprising delicacy for a 60% meunier wine, with a crisp, tight palate and lightly textured finish. A little toastiness is adding complexity. Bourne summed it up, “Rich in the mouth without being weighty”. 92/ 100 * * * *
Vintage.
2002 Laherte Freres Brut Prestige Millesime is an unusual style, and not only from its blend of 85% chardonnay and 15% meunier. Bourne found it had ‘spiciness and nougat, with a hint of coconut. A complex palate, with intense flavours’. The wine is still very fresh, thanks to the high proportion of chardonnay. I was alone in finding it rather lean and outside of the mainstream because of its new oak; it is fermented in barrels, half of them new. This also accounts for the distinct texture on the finish. 90/100 * * * *
